Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

August 31, 2025

Important Notice: As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10. Although your PC will continue to operate after this date, Microsoft will cease providing critical services such as security updates and technical support that are essential for keeping your system secure and running smoothly.

Why Business Owners Must Act Now

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your computer becomes vulnerable to emerging viruses, malware, and cyber-attacks. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported, newer Windows version is essential.
  • Software Compatibility Concerns: Many applications are regularly updated to function only on supported operating systems. Once Windows 10 reaches its end of life, you may experience software malfunctions or lose access to critical programs.
  • Compliance and Legal Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or operating under strict regulatory requirements risk non-compliance fines if using outdated technology. Staying current safeguards your business against potential legal setbacks.

What Are Your Upgrade Choices?

Microsoft urges users to transition to the latest Windows version prior to support ending. However, this can be challenging since not all machines running Windows 10 meet the hardware specifications required for Windows 11. Attempting to upgrade unsupported devices will lead to error messages.

If your device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:

  • Purchase a new PC that meets Windows 11 requirements
  • Enroll in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program (explained below)
  • Migrate to an alternative operating system like Linux
  • Avoid ignoring the deadline—this puts your business at significant risk and is strongly discouraged

Before any upgrade or transition, ensure you back up all important files and data to prevent loss during the process.

Extended Security Support for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) as a temporary measure. Note that ESU coverage is limited to one year beyond the October 2025 end-of-life date and is not a long-term solution.

To access ESU, you can either pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points to register. A free option exists if you enable Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive's cloud storage. Since OneDrive includes only 5GB free storage, you might need to purchase additional space for large backups.

Don't delay—registration for ESU must be completed before the October 14 deadline to qualify.
