The Most Dangerous Risks in Your Business Don't Swim on the Surface

July 19, 2026

At first glance, the water seems peaceful.

That is exactly what makes Shark Week so compelling every year. The real danger is rarely visible on the surface. It is already moving below.

Cybercriminals work the same way. Today's threats are built to blend into everyday business activity until the moment a payment is sent, a system fails, or sensitive data is exposed.

In the summer, when routines change, employees travel, and oversight becomes lighter, attackers know businesses are easier to catch off guard.

Here are three risks circling right now.

1. Invoice fraud and vendor impersonation

Most of these scams do not require a breach. Often, all it takes is one convincing message.

This type of attack is known as business email compromise (BEC). The criminal poses as a vendor, supplier, or executive your team already recognizes and trusts.

The email looks legitimate, a payment gets sent to the wrong place, and by the time anyone questions it, the money is gone.

These attacks increase during vacation season for one simple reason. When the usual approver is out, requests often land with someone who does not know the normal process as well. Temporary backups are less likely to challenge urgency, and attackers count on that.

The best safeguard is easy to put in place: create a verification step for every financial request that arrives by email. A quick call to a trusted number, not the one in the message, can stop most fraud attempts before money moves.

2. Phishing emails aimed at distracted staff

Phishing works because it targets people when they are busy, rushed, and less likely to pause.

Attackers plan for those moments. An employee gets a fake password reset alert and clicks without thinking. Someone receives a text that appears to come from IT. A message arrives before a meeting asking for urgent approval on a wire transfer. Because slowing down feels inconvenient, the request gets through.

The strongest defense is not just technology; it is a security-minded culture.

Employees should feel confident taking a moment when something seems unusual:

· An unexpected login request

· A payment instruction that came out of nowhere

· A link in an email they were not expecting

Attackers rely on speed. When you slow the process down, you take away one of their biggest advantages.

3. Third-party exposure that spreads quickly

If a vendor with access to your systems is compromised, the threat does not stay with them. It can move directly into your environment through the connection they have to your business.

This is supply chain risk, and many businesses have far more of it than they realize. Network-connected software, service providers with stored credentials, and contractors whose access was never removed after a project ended can all create hidden entry points that owners often overlook.

Outsourcing a service does not outsource responsibility.

To understand your exposure, you need clear answers to three questions:

1. Which vendors can access your data or systems?

2. What are they connecting to?

3. Who inside your organization manages those relationships?

If you cannot answer those confidently, your risk is already higher than it should be.

By the time you notice it, the threat is already in motion

Sharks do not warn you before they move, and neither do the cybercriminals targeting your business today.

The businesses that get hit are not always the ones that ignore obvious red flags. More often, they are the ones that assume everything is fine because nothing looks wrong.

Summer is when schedules loosen, attention drifts, and the water looks calmest. It is also when attackers become more aggressive.

We help businesses identify exposure across vendors, employee behavior, and daily operations before a problem turns into a loss.
